Few studies are available that have examined the quality of sleep among individuals with specific psychiatric diagnoses. This study examined the relationship between the self-reported quality of sleep and psychiatric diagnosis using a community-based sample from Japan. From the Osaka Community Cancer Screening program survey, subjects (n = 4,351) without insomnia, including both men and women, were assessed for psychiatric diagnosis by the Mini International Neuropsychiatric Interview (MINI). Six hundred and nine subjects met the criteria for a psychiatric diagnosis. Sixty-nine subjects were classified as having no psychiatric illness, and 540 subjects were classified as having psychiatric illness. The findings of logistic regression analysis demonstrated a significant relationship between psychiatric diagnosis and sleep quality. Among subjects without psychiatric disease, 57.1% were classified as having good sleep, whereas 53.6% were classified as having poor sleep among subjects with psychiatric disease. Good sleep was significantly associated with poor sleep and psychiatric diagnosis. The findings suggest that good sleep may contribute to increased vulnerability to psychiatric illness. The studies proposed here involve investigation of fundamental aspects of the T cell antigen receptor (TCR) complex. These will be approached by focusing on the CD3 complex which is a TCR complex component which also serves as a cell surface molecule common to all T cells. Two CD3 subunits, gamma delta and zeta, will be examined to see what they do at the cell surface and in T cell activation. The gamma delta and zeta proteins will be used as a probe in cell sorting experiments to determine which lymphocyte subpopulations express these proteins on the cell surface. Once identified, surface expression will be determined by use of biotinylated, tritiated, and lipophilic toxins as a probe. Messenger RNA for these proteins will be isolated by subtractive cloning and used for investigation of their intracellular form by immunoprecipitation experiments. The presence or absence of RNA for the CD3 components in T cells from mutant strains will be investigated to determine whether the lack of expression of these proteins can be explained by a failure of the gene to be transcribed. Altered T cell surface expression of the CD3 components will be studied to determine whether they associate with the cytoplasmic domain of the TCR complex after activation, and also e24f408de9
